The STABLE Idea

About ten years ago a cruise passenger asked a couple of his engineer friends if it was possible to make a stable billiard table, for use on ships even in rough seas.

His friends took this challenge to the drawing table, and 6 months later the first billiard table was tested on the ferry to Kiel in very heavy storms. An engineer working on the ship became very seasick. A clever head told him to rest on the billiard table, and he was cured. Then the idea for a stabilised bed was born, and so was STABLE.

In the creative process they wished to visualize the idea of a stabilised platform that can be used for many purposes. The idea of a goldfish bowl was created. A goldfish might not get seasick, but it is thought to be rather uncomfortable for a goldfish to end up on the floor in heavy waves.

“Within the Colony Club you can enjoy the Bombay Billard Club, with two self-leveling billiard tables and game tables to the Starboard Side, or televisions to the Port Side.”

Jacquelyn Hyde:

“The self-leveling billiard tables were amazing and certainly interesting to play on. I never thought that I would be able to play pool at sea, and you have to see it to truly experience it.”

Arline Bleecker:

“Arguably, the only thing that goes better with beer than pretzels is a pool table. And as something of a grace note, the Radiance of the Seas features the first billiard tables at sea – self-leveling ones, no less.”

Scott Wolfe:

“Beyond the bar was the Colony Club. Here is where the self-leveling pool tables were located. They were a conversation piece if nothing else. With no charge to play on them, the tables were consistently busy.”
